About the Tank Massive Flowy Muscle Tank 

This is a Bella Canvas muscle tank in army grey with dark grey ink. On the front is the word "Massive" and the Strong Athletic logo, on the back is the Strong Athletic logo. 

The Massive Muscle Tank was designed by Nadia Kean in the fall of 2017.

 

We created the Massive design to celebrate all of the massive people in the world doing massive things. We know that many times in athletics the word "massive" is associated with being big, bulky or having a muscular physic. We also know that the word is more likely to be used to describe a man than a woman. We wanted to recognize all of the women who claim the word massive. What we found was that those who decide to wear this tank fall into multiple categories. Some are women who were or are called, "fat" in a disparaging way, or who were or are told they were too big. These women are claiming the word "massive", just as they are claiming and taking back the word "fat." It's for a similar reason that we partnered with Chub Club to make the Strong Athletic & Fat shirts. 

 

 Some women wear the massive tanks because they were actually told the opposite- that they were or are too small, that they are tiny, that they don't take up space. These women want to claim the word massive as a way to show the world that their concept of self doesn't need to rely on what other people think of them. Many of these women have told Strong Athletic that people don't think anything of telling a woman that she is too "tiny" or "skinny," in a way that is different than they might tell someone that they think they are overweight.

 

It should go without saying, but it's never your place to comment on anyone's body, regardless of if you think the comment is welcome. Strong Athletic founder Nadia Kean found that when her muscles were visually larger she was more likely to have people comment on her body- how her muscles looked, telling her she was so strong, etc. Although some people might have said these things to her as a complement, many times they were from strangers at her gym, all of who were men. She didn't think they would have complemented a man on his body, and couldn't ignore that in their complement they almost seemed surprised that her muscles were large and she was strong. This is one of the reason's Nadia created this design. To make a statement about being massive, taking ownership of your body, your strength and celebrating it for yourself. 

 

The second reason Nadia created this design is because in 2017 she became obsessed with the word massive. She felt the wold told a compelling story about strength, momentum and taking up space. She wanted members of the Strong Athletic Community to take ownership of the word massive and wear it with pride.

About the Production of this Strong Athletic Shirt 

Every single Strong Athletic shirt is printed by a small-scale, local screen printer. The majority of our shirts are printed by Amanda in Austin, Texas who prints out of the Austin Screen Printer's Coop, a screen printing shop that is member owned and run in East Austin. When our shirts are not printed by Amanda they are printed by other small-scale screen printers such as Second Avenues Ink in Portland, Oregon or Leigh Valley Apparel Creations in Pennsylvania. As mentioned above, the art for this design was created by Cristen Perks in 2013 for Strong Athletic founder Nadia Kean. The Strong Athletic logo was created by Angel Ortega in 2015, until that point our shirts had the Get Smarty Coaching logo on them. The color combo of this shirt is a dark gray ink on a lighter gray fabric. The sleeves for this tee are dark gray. The words "Strong Athletic Woman" and the Strong Athletic logo are printed on the front of this long sleeve shirt, the Strong Athletic logo is printed on the back of the shirt. 

Every Strong Athletic Shirt comes wrapped in our signature "You are so Strong" wraps which are held together with a kraft Strong Athletic sticker. Each shirt is then packaged in a biodegradable kraft mailer that we get from a US based company called EcoEnclose. We include a postcard that shares the origin story of Strong Athletic and that is addressed by hand to the person receiving the shirt. Also included in every package is a Strong Athletic logo sticker and one of our "We Believe" stickers. Every time you open a package from Strong Athletic we want it to feel special, especially if you're sending the Strong Athletic shirt as a gift.
